CY CHOI 2010 SPRING/SUMMER MEN'S COLLECTION " Boundaries and cutout "

CY CHOI 2010 S/S SEASON THEME 『 Boundaries and cutout 』

"Elegance is that quality in behaviour that transforms the highest quantity of being in appearing." Jean Paul Sartre

Chul Yong Choi is a Korean designer, currently living in Milan who has studied art and fashion in South Korea and in Italy. He has collaborated with important Italian and international brands as consultant and art director. His brilliant career is characterized by a constant and deep research on the connections between art, design and fashion, which finds achievement in the debut of the CY CHOI line, with the S/S 2010 Menswear collection.

Boundaries and cutout - the theme of the collection - is a statement that perfectly represents the sophisticated research expressed in the collection. The relation between spaces and cracks hiding their own reality; a delicate balance in the relation between art and design towards the definition of another category of thought; the 3-dimensionality of the outfits hung and worn that acquires different values; paintings graphically representing two spaces and garments interpreting the body; the search of the mistake as artistic dimension: these are the key elements of a collection that starting from a competent research on tailoring intends to express a new and different way of interpreting contemporary men's elegance.
The research is based on the work of three artists, pivotal in the designer's experience: El Lisstzky for the construction of the garments, Henry Matisse for the deep exploration of the meaning and the technique of the cutout, Chris Johansen, whose work has inspired the physical postures of the presentation of the collection.
The crack, the theme of the line, is both physical and conceptual: it is graphic sign or textile insert, as well as it is the space between classic and contemporary style, which gives life to a new idea of gentleman, cool and sophisticated, whose wardrobe is marked by the high quality of the garments, the tailoring research and the innovative shapes. These are the signs and the details that make the collection nice to wear, without hiding the personality of who is wearing it, but instead supporting the style of an understated, refined and modern man, projected towards the future.

The concept is present in the choice of materials, too, all 100% natural. The fabrics are the qualitative archetypes of the top of the range of the international textile market: Italian Supergabardine 470 gr for coats & jackets, classic British wool for tailored jackets, natural dyed cotton woven on ancient Japanese looms for jackets and pants, raw Italian linen for jackets, shirts and pants - the material that better expresses the 3-dimensionality of the collection - Japanese denims, natural dyed selvaged indigo 12.5 and 13 ounces and grey denim 8.5 and 10 ounces for workwear pants 30's style, cupro 100% for linings.
The items: tailored jackets, vests, shirts, denim trenches, workwear jackets, jeans and hand silk-screen printed t-shirts with applications create an ideal and contemporary wardrobe from the graphic signs to the apparently traditional stripes at the same time concealing and revealing a different point of view on fashion.

Brand philosophy

Boundary; between this and that

The boundary is to differentiate the objects from two exclusive lines. But in a different viewpoint this thin lines being microscopically disassembled from both attribution accomplish various layers. Like a countless spectrum with black and white boundary. Potential disassembled line is no longer exclusive attribute but symmetrize and harmonize. Standing above the boundary contiguity of an object we will focus on the positive aspects.
