JULIAANDBEN 2011 SPRING/SUMMER WOMEN'S COLLECTION

JULIAANDBEN (ジュリアアンドベン) 2011 SPRING/SUMMER SEASON - BRAND Q&A

Q1. Please outline your concept for SS11 and the reasons behind it.

The name is "Absorbed Landscapes" here is the poem:

Nothing but precious adventures
An expensive view into Julias and Ben's minds

Where am I?
What the f... is this again?
Strange smell allover this morning.

Where is Julia?
Is she cruising around one more time?
Busy girl.
Mojave desert. Red rock canyon business holidays.

Meanwhile Ben is polishing old affairs that will never look new again.
Sand scratches wooden floor.
Golden light through a half broken window.
Like a rescue blanket.

It is hot in California.
But also in Berlin.
Two suns bleaching all the colours.
A red one and a white one.
Bleaching our eyes.
With bleached eyes we try to dye our fabrics.
More dirt.
Hey hey, let's go further!
A disgusting bathroom as a coffee table.
Smoking cigarettes with industrious hands.
Black burnouts.
Life is fun fun fun!

Absorbed landscapes.
Digital picture safari.
Phallus action.
Lazy lions all around us.
A hundreds of hyaena smiles.

Peyote cactuses sharpely cut out.
Laughing blue sky print outs.

Q2. For this season, what fabrics are you paying attention to?

We used lots of knits and Jersey, Viscose, linen, cotton, some thin new wool. Also we stay with our hand dyed items, and for the first time dyed fabric that is not elastique, a 100% organic cotton for trousers. And there are some leather applications or inserts for the first time.

Q3. What role does color play in your SS11 collection?

we never use aggressive colors, you can have almost every product we have in black, but for the lookbook and the overall effect our inspiration was a trip to California and Nevada, the colors of red rock canyon and the desert - which led to hand dyed colors in shades from grey light rose to terracotta red.

Q4. Please choose 3 key items from the collection and outline why you chose them.

I picked the Trapez coat desert wool - because of the special print and cut it is an outstanding item in the collection but very important

than the circle jacket with leather, the cut is very avantagarde and than the leather is different on every jacket almost making it a one of a kind piece, we cut the leather on the border of the skin and however this is the colar is bigger smaller more curvy ect....

and least but not last we pick the t-shirt dress hand dyed in knit ecause it is our basic best seller from the beginning on but this season we made it in crincled knit for the first time and it is perfect for almost any situation and combinable with many different looks.

Q5. Please tell us what things are important to you when thinking of a new design.

thinking of a new design. We are pretty much inspired by everything that surround us, also the house our studio is in is a bug old empty house from 1900 where we dye and work, we have our shop here and do all fotoshootings. its like a witch - kitchen where we experiment and get inspiration. Its a mix between traveling and than coming back home that inspires us.

Q6. What do you think of fashion in Japan?

Because we have never been to Japan yet its hard to tell - what we hear and see about it is that people are much more open to fashion and new trends and willing to pay money for it. We think that its either more crazy and experimental than in other places in the world and if its conservative its in a good minimalistic way. so i guess we like it :-)

Q7. Finally, please give us your thoughts on our website JAMOOL LIFE.

We like it a lot, all the pictures and typing have a pretty fashion forward and professional look. also we are prousd that you selected us because you have picked pretty good designers on your site.

Designer

Julia Heuse and Ben Klunker

Julia Heuse and Ben Klunker met as students at the prestigious Berlin design school ESMOD and founded their eponymous fashion label on graduating in 2006.

The collaboration proves that two minds are often better than one; they channel their respective influences into a menswear and womenswear label that continues to strike a balance between commercial and conceptual classic and avant-garde and mixes glamour with a unique Berlin street style.

The interaction of abstract and conceptual ideas between the designers is symbiotic and fuels designs that both challenge conventionality – such as boxy oversized cuts or draped fabrics in both their designs for women and men - but importantly their creations are also flattering. Many of the materials they use have been tie-dyed bleached moon-washed or aged to create different effects.

The label was born in the backroom of Ben’s art gallery in Berlin’s bustling art district Mitte and the space has since developed into an atelier to house the burgeoning label. Julia and Ben also have a store on Torstrasse and sell globally.
