TODD LYNN 2011 SPRING/SUMMER MEN'S & WOMEN'S COLLECTION

TODD LYNN (トッドリン) 2011 SPRING/SUMMER SEASON - BRAND Q&A

Q1. Please outline your concept for SS11 and the reasons behind it.

I had read an article while travelling in the summer about how scientists had 'created artificial life' in the laboratory. I started thinking about all of the science fiction movies that I used to watch when I was very young and how these weird science fiction ideas (like Bladerunner, for example) could actually one day really happen. So the collection is devoted to the future 'creatures' that could come from these laboratories. That's where the snakeskin comes from. It has a weird matte finish and actually on first glance looks for like a scaly textured skin.

Q2. For this season, what fabrics are you paying attention to?

I always try to work with masculine fabrics from women's collections. It's important that the fabrics relate to both genders. I like to work with more "technical" developed fabrics from forward thinking mills in Italy. They are expensive, but I believe that this is the foundation to the entire collection.

Q3. What role does color play in your SS11 collection?

Again, any colours that I use must relate to both men and women. Most of the colours have a grey base to them, thus not making them too 'pretty'. Colour on the runway enhances the cut and structure of the pieces and of course everything comes in black!

Q4. Please choose 3 key items from the collection and outline why you chose them.

I really like the looks that are mixes of fabrics, materials and textures. The idea of new beautiful 'creatures' formed in the future. Part hum,an and part something else.... These are all serious 'full-on looks', but then it's a fashion show..... it should be full on!

Look 3 - Half snakeskin jacket. With the leather cropped trousers and the very special 'snakeskin' socks.

Look 21 and 22 - the drape jacket. I really like the drape against the structure and the mix of textures, stretch linen with the snakeskin and leather.

Look 10 - This was a piece that I did with London Jewellery designer Shaun Leane. Again it's a mix of all types of textures curved plates of silver riveted on to stretch linen combined with a snakeskin back.

Q5. Please tell us what things are important to you when thinking of a new design.

The pieces are designed first in menswear. This is important, as it's the foundation of the collection. Afterwards the pieces are adapted to fit women. The proportions are altered and the pieces evolve to enhance the concept on the female form. The women should never look masculine. I think that the masculine pieces enhance the femininity of the woman who wears them.

Q6. What do you think of fashion in Japan?

I have always been an admirer of Japanese culture. I love that fashion and image is such an important part of everyone's lives, and that there is so much diversity within the different communities. I have many Japanese admirers who often email the office, and I do personally read all the email that come with praise. Thank you everyone in Japan!

Q7. Is there any news of your brand that you would like to tell us about?

I am working on a men's jewellery collaboration with the online website ASOS.com. It should be for sale around Dec. time..... stay tuned.

Q8. Finally, please give us your thoughts on our website JAMOOL.

I really admire your website. You have given attention to my collection for many season and were on e of the first website to cover the menswear.
