Q1. Please outline your concept for AW11 and the reasons behind it.

For A/W11 I moved my work forward from S/S11 where I experimented with using jewellery as embellishment, this season I started playing with the idea of trapping jewellery in-between/underneath garments to have a play with layering. I also experimented with structure, cut outs and contradictions (something I like to work on each season).

Q2. For this season, what fabrics are you paying attention to?

For the garments - sheer metallic voiles, airtex, mohair, waxed cotton, felted wool.

For the jewellery - crystals, plastic grids, coloured aluminium metal loops, mohair/voile/cotton neckties.

Q3. What role does color play in your AW11 collection?

The colour has quite a sludgy, sickly tone mixing browns, rusts and yolk yellows together with more 'classic' black and White.

Q4. Please choose 3 key items from the collection and outline why you chose them.

- a sheer brown vest with trapped jewellery between the layers: this explains my thinking of trapping the jewellery in-between the layers and using it as modern day embellishment

- a brown mohair coat with the back cut out of it: this shows how classic items can have a twist to them - cut outs in the back and lapel, chain instead of belt loops etc...

- a layered and cut out brown mohair and black airtex dress with tie hinge necklace: experimental pattern cutting that explains the 'feel' to this collection

Q5. Please tell us what things are important to you when thinking of a new design.

Cut, structure, and balance.

Q6. What do you think of fashion in Japan?

I love Japanese style, my jewellery collaboration with David Longshaw is sold in several Japanese stores, and I love seeing street style images of the girls wearing my stuff, as they wear it with such imagination which is great and very inspiring.

Q7. Is there any news of your brand?

My brand is up for a WGSN global fashion award in the 'Breakthrough Designer' catergory - the awards are held in new York in October so that's rather exciting!

Kirsty Ward’s aesthetic celebrates bold cuts, defined structures and powerful embellishment. Originally from Oxfordshire she completed her BA in Womenswear in Manchester before going on to undertake the prestigious MA Womenswear course at Central Saint Martins. It was here that she began to develop her penchant for unconventional structures and an emphasis on form. Graduating with a distinction she was quickly snapped up by Alberta Ferretti to design for her in Italy. After a year and a half honing her craft with Ferretti, Kirsty Ward launched her eponymous label in 2010.

A merging of jewellery and clothing are at the core of Kirsty Ward’s collections. Materials as varied and unexpected as rivets and hinges, often festooned with streams of silk and Swarovski crystals, are layered between luxuriously sheer fabrics. This merging of contrasting yet complementary elements is key to the eclectic nature of Kirsty Ward’s designs.

Ward’s collections have received high praise and plaudits from the most respected of fashion industry leaders. Elle.co.uk named her a ‘Rising Star of 2011’ and Vogue.com announced that she was one of their ‘Designer’s to Watch in 2011’. Selected as one of Selfridges’ Bright Young Things of 2011 Kirsty Ward showcased her debut collection in the store’s window and created limited edition pieces to be sold in store and online. Kirsty Ward has shown her collection at the Vauxhall Fashion Scout Ones to Watch show in London and Paris.
