Morkna 2011 AUTUMN/WINTER SEASON - BRAND Q&A
Q1. Please outline your concept for AW11 and the reasons behind it.
For this season Seth and I wanted to give a minimalistic line that provoked the audience to question traditional proportions. We tried to keep the pieces simple. By doing so, this allows the consumer to apply the minimalistic pieces in a maximal way allowing their voice and sense of individuality to be heard.
Q2. For this season, what fabrics are you paying attention to?
This season was all natural fibers and some antelope skin. We were fortunate to find beautiful surplus fabrics from Italian mills.
Q3. What role does color play in your AW11 collection?
The word mörkna is Swedish for "to darken". Color doesn't play a huge role in this collection purely because we didn't want color to distract from the textures in the fabric and lines in the clothing.
Q4. Please choose 3 key items from the collection and outline why you chose them.
Diver Jacket - Simply our take on the traditional hooded jacket. This piece embodies what we consider to be the perfect hoodie. It is made of very heavy-weight double knit cotton with antelope skin accents. It has an elongated bodice with a high zip that covers the mouth and removable hood.
Wrap Cardigan - Made from a wool knit with a wool woven lining. The openings can be gathered using the drawstrings creating beautiful lines and a really interesting silhouette.
Kimono Sleeve Jacket - It's an anti-fit piece. It is made of a wool with a cotton poplin lining. It has a very high neck and twisted zipper.
Q5. Please tell us what things are important to you when thinking of a new design.
As new, young designers (I'm 22 and Seth is 30) we try not to over-design our pieces. I think it is very easy for young designers to get carried away with their designs. Seth and I will design something, come back to it in a week and work subtractively. Antoine de Saint Exupery said "Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away." I'm a firm believer in this statement and while we do not make any claim to being perfect, we try to keep this in mind during the design process.
Q6. What do you think of fashion in Japan?
Japanese fashion has a meticulous strive for perfection, as exhibited in all it's culture's ambitions. It's approach to fashion is unsentimental in observing other cultures traditional wear. This produces unconventional interpretations of wearable and extremely unique clothing. The Japanese people and designers have such a great sense of volume on the body and in turn create beautiful silhouettes.
Q7. Is there any news of your brand?
We are currently working on Fall/Winter 2012 and have been very fortunate in finding an Italian cobbler who is going to produce a very limited run of shoes and boots for us in the coming seasons. Expect to see some bags in the coming seasons too.
Q8. Finally, please give us your thoughts on our website JAMOOL.
Great site. Wonderful collection of brands and creative minds both established and up and coming.
Morkna
Designer
Dave Fryer and Seth Bullough
Mörkna is an androgynous line that explores the idea of exaggerated minimalism and expression of individuality through the use of layer and texture. The Mörkna collection is the result of the combined efforts of American-born designers Dave Fryer and Seth Bullough, which they established in the summer of 2010. They look to stay conscious of line and volume with the careful selection of fabrics their highest priority.
Our goal is to offer interesting silhouettes, amazing fabrics and the best quality construction for those looking for an alternative to traditional masculinity. We’re fortunate to be working with a high-quality sewing factory in mid-town Manhattan and using surplus Italian fabrics, giving them new life.
