Cooperative Designs 2011 AUTUMN／WINTER SEASON － BRAND Q&A

Q1. Please outline your concept for AW11 and the reasons behind it.

The collection was inspired by British boyband East 17, specifically their video Its Alright. We loved the oversized silhouettes, the combat trousers, the hats and the colours they throw shapes against. We also looked at our own history, clubbing in the 1990s, drum and bass clubs in London and Berlin. The graphics were inspired by the industrial photography of Thomas Struth.

Q2. For this season, what fabrics are you paying attention to?

Super chunky lambswool contrasted with neon acrylic stitching. Soft wools, cashmere and silk combined in jaquard knits with neon shoelaces and trims. Handpainted neon wooden buttons.

Q3. What role does color play in your AW11 collection?

Colour is always important to us. This season was about monochrome and military colours contrasting with extreme brights. Also warm ketchup oranges and navy.

Q4. Please choose 3 key items from the collection and outline why you chose them.

The oversized batwing jaquard dress, the wide mohair balloon skirt with combat pockets, and the wide cropped jaquard jumper with pockets. We love these pieces, they are signature Cooperative oversized and graphic, easy to wear and really comfortable but high impact!

Q5. Please tell us what things are important to you when thinking of a new design.

The most important thing is do we want to wear it? If its not right for us it won't be right for our customers. Its got to feel luxurious and easy, and make you look great.

Q6. What do you think of fashion in Japan?

We love it! The sense of fantasy, luxury, ease of wear and an appreciation for craft.

Q7. Is there any news of your brand?

We have just delivered to our first stockist in Japan - HP France, Concento in Tokyo. We are extremely excited to be have been picked by such a great store, and to finally be available in Japan!

Annalisa Dunn and Dorothee Hagemann

Cooperative Designs is a knitwear label based in London, run by design duo Annalisa Dunn and Dorothee Hagemann, who met on the MA Fashion Course at Central St. Martins in 2007.

Upon graduation they joined forces to create Cooperative Designs, both knitwear label and a platform for like-minded creative people. The design aesthetic of the label is highly graphic, quirky and modern knitwear. The collections are a celebration of knitwear, subverted with a mixture of traditional and experimental techniques. Cooperative Designs knitwear is the ultimate in luxury, attention to detail and craftsmanship. The pair design every single aspect of the fabric from the exact fibre used, to the size of each stitch, using luxury materials and working with the finest factories.

Each season the pair commission specialist designer/makers to create exclusive ranges to complement the main collection. So far collaborations include, amongst others, jewellery, millinery and bags.

Dunn and Hagemann also consult for established labels, Michael van der Ham, Noel Stewart, Hussein Chalayan, AW08 & AW09, Tim Soar, SS09 and Henri Bendel SS09.

In 2009 the pair were commissioned by legendary Italian knitwear brand Stefanel to create a collection to celebrate the companies 50th birthday which was presented in Milan Fashion Week September 2009 to critical acclaim. Stefanel went on to commission a second collection to be sold internationally, and sponsored the Cooperative Designs presentation in February 2010.

Cooperative Designs have been awarded New Generation sponsorship by the British Fashion Council. Since then they have presented their collections on the Official London Schedule.

Previous exhibitions include Stefanel 50, Milan Fashion Week, The Endless Garment, The New Craft of Machine Knitting, RMIT gallery, Australia, Eureka Night at the Design Museum, London and the Inaugural Woolmark Award 2008 at The Palais de Tokyo, Paris.

The pair were featured as the New Talents in Knitwear in Italian Vogue May 2009
