t.lipop 2012 SPRING／SUMMER SEASON － BRAND Q&A

Q1. Please outline your concept for SS12 and the reasons behind it.

This season, I sort of worked backwards. I started jotting down ideas and designs, creating shapes before thinking about how I got to that point. I was looking through a book called 'The Witness of Time'. It's a beautiful book with stunning images of South America, culture and in particular Guatemala. It somehow related to what I had been sketching previously and it grew from there.

Q2. For this season, what fabrics are you paying attention to?

Luxury fabrics are the premise for our collections. In particular; Cashmere, Silks, Silk Blends and Vanetian Wools. We always use beautiful cloths and the ethos behind t.lipop is we are always trying to push cutting and our minimal aesthetic. This is how we are going about setting us apart from other labels. Each season we are trying to develop our signature style. We're very much about cutting here, there are a lot of technically constructed garments. We like to eliminate seams where possible (one of our coats has been cut in just two pattern pieces, excluding the lining.) We pay extra attention to detail such as signature darts, seams and finishes which I think is essential in menswear. The collection for SS12 has a completely different feel from AW11 but continues to push our aesthetic.

Q3. What role does color play in your SS12 collection?

Colour has taken a strong role this season. We were desperate for a particular colour of blue, we searched high and low for it. When we eventually found it, we were like Wow, that's the colour. It really has made the collection standout and were so excited to show it. We've also got a beautiful burnt orange colour which is very exciting especially seeing that one of our bags is a burnt orange suede.

Q4. Please choose 3 key items from the collection and outline why you chose them.

We have our signiture suede shirt and short combo in an elctric blue which looks so rich and amazing!

The amazing embroidered Egg Coat in Agnona Cashmere which has a great silhouette.

Finally the wrap drape blazer which I cut in 2 pieces of fabric excluding the lining. It looks amazing.

Q5. Please tell us what things are important to you when thinking of a new design.

I always look at a garment and break it down to the basics. I think about how to progress that garment into something that is modern, intelligent and forward thinking. Removing unnecessary seams and darts making the garment clean. The difficult thing is keeping the fit, that's normally what the seams and darts are there for in the first place but we have managed it as you'll see in some of our contemporary blazers.

Q6. What do you think of fashion in Japan?

Fashion in Japan is great. I love designers such as Juun J. I think there is a real style to the Japanese fashion. I hope we can stock there some day soon.

Q7. Is there any news of your brand?

The latest news is that our new website www.tlipop.com has launched and we are very excited about S/S12. I feel is gonna be the best season yet.
